If you’ve been asking questions about CBD oil, whether to us, to Google, or to friends, this article was created just for you. Let’s dig into your CBD oil FAQ’s!

What are the side effects of CBD oil?

CBD oil side effects are pretty minimal and minor. CBD oil is considered a safe substance, with no toxicity or dependency problems associated with long-term use. But nothing’s perfect, right? Here are the possible side effects that studies have shown can be associated with CBD oil use:

    1. Dry mouth. This is exactly what it sounds like. Worst case scenario, you drink a little more water than usual.
    2. Low blood pressure. This usually occurs within the first few minutes of ingesting CBD oil and passes very quickly. If you have issues with blood pressure, talk to your doctor before trying CBD oil.
    3. Dizziness. Usually, this mild side effect is a result of lowered blood pressure. It should pass within a few minutes.
    4. Nausea. An unusual side effect of CBD oil, nausea symptoms are mild and typically resolve within a few minutes to an hour.
    5. Sleepiness. High doses of CBD oil can cause sleepiness — in fact, CBD oil is often used to treat insomnia. If taking high doses of CBD oil, avoid operating machinery or driving for several hours after ingesting, or if sleepiness is a side effect you appear to have from CBD oil use.
    6. Headaches. Stories of headaches as a side effect of CBD oil are rare and seem to be related to choosing poor quality CBD oil that is tainted with solvents that people may be sensitive to.
    7. Increased muscle tremors related to Parkinson’s Disease. High doses of CBD oil appear to worsen muscle tremors associated with Parkinson’s Disease. However, low doses may actually help improve this condition. If you have Parkinson’s Disease, speak with your doctor before trying CBD oil.

Does CBD get you high?

This is the most common question we hear from our customers! The answer is simple.

No!

No, CBD oil cannot make you high. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the component in marijuana responsible for creating a ‘high’. CBD oil is a cannabinoid from the same plant, or family of plant, but does not produce this result. In fact, CBD oil can actually reduce the effect of THC on the body by blocking its ability to bind to the CB2 receptors in the body. If your CBD oil is derived from hemp, the levels of THC present in hemp are 33 times lower than necessary to produce a high.

Basically, if your CBD oil is hemp-derived, it is chemically impossible to get high.

If your CBD oil is derived from cannabis, the answer is still no. There will be trace amounts of THC present, but these will be far too low to produce any ‘high’ effect. Be warned, however, that finding a high-quality CBD oil brand is important here.

What does CBD do to you?

The benefits of CBD oil are documented over a broad range of health conditions, and research has accelerated dramatically since the legalization of CBD oil and medical marijuana use.

We could go into all the complicated science of how CBD oil (cannabinoids) affect your body, but an FAQ page isn’t the place for that. In a nutshell, the cannabinoids in CBD oil interact with the endocannabinoid system in your body. CBD oil triggers the natural responses in your body — you are not drugged up. Instead, CBD oil helps to optimize and balance functions in your body. For example, CBD oil for insomnia does not drug you but works by helping your body balance the chemicals responsible for inducing (or preventing) sleep.

Here are just a few of the documented benefits of CBD oil:

Does CBD Oil Work?

Yes. There is plenty of scientific research backing up the use of CBD oil. We feel it’s safe to say that CBD oil helps relieve many health conditions. That said, all of our bodies respond differently, and what is very beneficial for some people may not be so for everyone. But for now, take a few moments to check out our growing library of research studies backing the use of CBD oil for a variety of health conditions.

Before trying CBD oil to relieve or support medical conditions, we’d recommend speaking with a trusted naturopath or medical practitioner.

What is CBD Oil Used For?

CBD oil is used to support a variety of functions within the body. Research shows that CBD has significant promise for treating many types of health concerns. The benefits of CBD oil primarily relate to its ability to influence the natural systems within the body for better performance and balance.

The following is a list of health issues that CBD oil may help/relieve:

  • Acne
  • Aid to quit smoking
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Autoimmune disorders (some)
  • Back pain
  • Cancer (may block cancer cells from spreading around the body, suppress the growth of cancer cells, and promote cancer cell death)
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • Drug withdrawals
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Glaucoma
  • Inflammation
  • Insomnia and sleep disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Neurodegenerative disorders (Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s, etc)
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Pain from post-op recovery
  • Panic disorders
  • PTSD
  • Schizophrenia
  • Social anxiety disorders
  • Type 1 Diabetes

This list is by no means comprehensive, and additional research is required to support some of the personal testimonies regarding the benefits of CBD oil.

How to Take CBD Oil

There are a variety of ways to take CBD. We recommend using CBD oil, as it is absorbed into your system quickly and allows for precise and easy dosing. CBD oil may come in capsules, softgels, or in a dropper or syringe.

When asked how to ingest CBD oil, we recommend using a dropper to place drops under the tongue. Allow to sit there before swallowing. Alternatively, the CBD oil can be placed into juice or water to be ingested.

If your CBD oil is in softgels or capsules, you can either swallow them whole, or open them to access the oil inside if a smaller dose is desired. (This can get messy, so it’s best to find a lower dose CBD oil than go this route.)

Always start with the smallest recommended dose and gradually increase until it has the desired effect. Start slow and be patient. It may take up to several hours before you feel the effects of CBD oil. If a dose doesn’t produce an effect, increase the amount the following day or approximately 12 hours after the original dose.

If you have any questions on CBD dosage, give our team a call and we’ll be happy to walk you through it.

How long does CBD take to work?

CBD oil can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to produce an effect. Part of this will depend on whether you’ve chosen an oil or a softgel/capsule. In a pill form, your stomach acid must break down the outer layer of the softgel or capsule before it can begin to metabolize the CBD oil. Using CBD oil drops or a spray in your mouth allows your body to begin processing the CBD more quickly, and usually produces quicker results.

Is it possible to overdose on CBD oil?

No. Studies have shown that CBD oil can be safely taken in high doses over long periods of time without any sign of toxicity or emerging health concerns. It would be extremely difficult for an adult human to overdose on CBD oil — you’d most likely fall asleep or throw up. You absolutely would not feel like running a marathon.

That said, as far as we are aware, no one has TRIED to overdose on CBD oil. After all, you can even overdose on water if you try hard enough.

And we definitely don’t recommend trying it. Instead, follow recommended doses and use common sense. Be intentional about staying safe and responsible. If you’re using CBD oil for an acute health concern, we’d suggest increasing your CBD oil doses under the guidance of a naturopath or medical professional.

What does CBD oil feel like?

For the most part, taking CBD oil feels like nothing. You may experience one or more of the mild side effects that can be associated with CBD oil, such as dizziness. But usually, you’ll simply feel some symptom relief.

For example, if you are taking CBD oil for anxiety, you’ll begin to feel more calm and relaxed. You may even feel muscles loosening as the tension in your body is lowered.

If you are taking CBD oil for pain management, you’ll feel lessened pain and/or inflammation.

CBD oil does NOT produce a high or euphoric sensation like that of marijuana. The only euphoria you’ll experience is the joy of finally getting some relief from your health issues!

Is CBD legal in all 50 states?

Hemp-derived CBD is legal in all 50 states. In December 2018, The 2018 Farm Bill effectively legalized hemp at the federal level by removing it from the federal list of controlled substances and classifying it as an agricultural commodity. In this rapidly changing landscape, it’s unclear to what extent this legalization extends to CBD on a federal level

We would encourage you to investigate each state’s individual laws before traveling, as the information contained here may become outdated as laws regarding hemp and cannabis continue to be changed. We will do our best to keep our content up to date, but, ultimately, it is your responsibility to investigate the laws further, both when at home, and when traveling.

Does CBD oil show up on drug tests?

Considering that CBD oil is derived from hemp (a part of the cannabis plant family) or cannabis, this is a perfectly understandable concern. Routine drug testing and random drug testing is a common aspect of employment for many. While the list of CBD oil benefits is long, it’s not worth risking a failed drug test, right?

Thankfully, the urine drug screen for THC and its metabolites is known to have very little cross-reactivity to other cannabinoids that are non-psychoactive, such as CBD, CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), and others. CBD oil, especially that derived from hemp, contains only trace amounts of THC.

For example, hemp contains anywhere from 1/10th to 1/300th of the THC concentration found in marijuana. Not enough to trigger a positive on a test.

However, an individual who is consuming a minimum of 1,000 – 2,000 mg of CBD oil per day, this would total approximately 3-6mg of THC. This is nowhere near enough to produce a high in the user but potentially could result in a positive detection in a urine screen.

In summary, a typical CBD oil user is unlikely to fail a urine drug screening. If you are taking extremely high doses of CBD oil to help with a chronic health problem, however, you may be at risk of a false positive.

If this puts your employment at risk, we would strongly recommend that you choose a CBD isolate which contains 0% THC, as this removes the risk. It may be helpful to discuss your use with your medical practitioner and employer. Your doctor may be willing to write a statement in regard to your use of CBD oil to be given to your employer, and, once educated on CBD oil and the health benefits you derive from it, your employer may also be willing to discount a false positive, should that arise.

But, if you feel that taking CBD oil puts your employment at risk, it may be best that you consider other healthy support options. This is entirely your decision. We do not recommend anyone take chances with their employment.

  4. I have ADHD/depression and anxiety. all have been treated with medication for the past year. for the ADHD I was on riddelin first, after months of struggling with my therapist try to convince her that the riddelin was not working she finally switched to Vyvanse. 40mg in the morning worked wonders, I was calmer and unfortunately caused than I have been in years. even though this was working for me, after work I was a daily smoker due to chronic pain and insomnia. since Vyvanse is a controlled substance I was required to do a drug test. which of course I failed. no, I have been without the Vyvanse and trying to clean my system out so that I can pass the drug test. but I guess my question is, does CBD oil help with ADHD? I know that it helps with depression and anxiety.but the ADHD is still a daily struggle.

    2. Hi Hailee,

We have heard from a few of our customers that CBD has helped with their struggle with ADHD, while a couple of others didn’t feel it had a noticeable effect. We’re all different, so what works for some won’t work for all! We have noticed that a change of brand can get a different result.

If you’d want to try some out, know that we have a guarantee on our products, so if it doesn’t work out, you can get full in-store credit to try something else.

If you stop in the store, our Wellness Consultants would be happy to chat with you about it more!

  5. I currently take gabapentin for arthritis pain. However it makes me quite drowsy. Is CBD oil a good alternative? I notice in the description it also causes drowsiness.

    Reply
    1. Hi Judy,

CBD could be a great alternative, but we might suggest pairing it with some of our other supplements that are also really helpful for arthritis pain, such as Curamin and Fibrenza. CBD does cause drowsiness in some people, and for others, it doesn’t — it can vary from individual to individual. We’d be happy to talk to you if you want to try it out. Stop in one of our stores and we can set you up! If CBD doesn’t work out, you can return it for in-store credit and we can work with you to find something else that does.

  7. My husband has been taking Pure7 berry flavored CBD oil for several months to relieve terrible muscle spasms caused by peripheral neuropathy and possible MS. Drs cannot actually make the diagnosis of MS as he has a metal clip in his brain from an aneurysm 30 years ago. He does have all of the symptoms though and is taking meds used for MS. The CBD oil has helped tremendously for the spasms. I have been ordering it on-line. My question is: do you carry the Pure7 flavored oil in the 1 oz bottles and if so, how much is it

I’m so sorry to hear you’re struggling with neuropathy! CBD has been helpful for some people with neuropathy, but because it’s a tricky condition, it can take some time to find the right CBD brand and dosage. We do offer product guarantees, however, so if you try something that doesn’t work out and we need to switch to an alternative option, you’ll get full in-store credit for all your opened products.

  10. Question for Tim O’Brien,

You state that “hemp-derived CBD oil is legal in all 50 states IF it is sourced from an approved program.” What assurance(s) can you, or do you, provide to your customers, business partners, etc., that all the products you are selling are strictly sourced from an approved Wisconsin program?

Is there some form of labeling on each of the products that states they conform to Wisconsin law?

Do you post something in writing somewhere that certifies your business is in compliance with any applicable regs., etc., with respect to all of your CBD oil products?

Does your business do any kind of independent testing on the CBD products you sell to ensure or verify they are compliant and completely legal in Wisconsin?

    Thanks. Jeff

    1. Hey Jeff,

Awesome questions! I’m going to have Tim reach out to you directly to talk through how we make sure we’re adhering to Wisconsin laws.

To answer your questions in brief, we source all of our CBD from reputable and carefully screened companies. They adhere to strict ingredient integrity standards and derive their CBD products from hemp. You won’t see most of the products have assurances on their labels specific to Wisconsin, as these brands sell widely throughout the United States.

Again, we’ll reach out to you so we can go into more depth of information.
