What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Have you heard of Bulletproof Coffee?

If you’re any kind of coffee enthusiast, you most likely you have. But if not, it has been a popular trend since 2009. Creator, Dave Asprey, first discovered this coffee while hiking in Tibet.  Bulletproof Coffee typically includes coffee, grass-fed butter or ghee and MCT oil (also known as ‘brain octane oil’. Personally, I also enjoy adding a few other ingredients, such as collagen. The goal of Bulletproof Coffee is to give you extended energy that won’t make you feel jittery, while the added fats will leave you feeling full longer and can help curb cravings.

I have been drinking some version of Bulletproof Coffee for the past few years. I enjoy my morning cup of coffee daily and I love knowing that I’m getting an extra boost. Here is what I put in my “Amped Up Coffee” – my own version of Bulletproof Coffee.

Ingredients:                                                                                    Optional add-ins:

  • 1 cup of good coffee                                                            – ½ t. cacao powder
  • 1 T. grass-fed butter or ghee                                               – 1 t. liquid stevia
  • 1 t. MCT oil or brain octane oil
  • 1 scoop of collagen

  1. Brew one cup of coffee.
  2. In a blender combine all of the ingredients.
  3. Blend for at least 30 seconds to combine the ingredients.
  4. Enjoy!

What Are the Added Benefits?

Now that you know how to make it, let’s chat about the benefits. Why in the world would anyone want to put butter or MCT oil in their coffee? Isn’t fat bad for us?

We’ve been hearing that fat is bad for so long. While there is some truth in this idea, the reality is more complex than we’ve been led to believe. When it comes to fats, it’s really about the kind and quality of fats that we are consuming. Healthy fats actually provide a number of benefits for our health.

A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Have you ever noticed that grass-fed butter is more yellow in color than regular (grain-fed) butter? This is because grass-fed butter contains high levels of vitamin A, which comes from the plant-based diet of the cows. Vitamin A supports eye health, bone health, and can strengthen the immune system. Grass-fed butter also has high levels of butyric acid which can help decrease inflammation. Grass-fed butter or ghee (ghee is lactose and casein free) gives the coffee a smooth texture and creamy flavor.

MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil, another healthy fat, is extracted from coconut oil.  MCTs are easily digested because of their shorter ‘chain’ length. This oil releases hormones in the body that give us the feeling of having a full tummy for a longer period of time. They are also an almost instant source of energy, as they do not require a lot of effort to be broken down.

Lastly, collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It is a building block that promotes healthy skin, bones, muscles and joints. It strengthens our gut (intestinal lining) and promotes healthy hair and nail growth as well. While it is the most abundant protein in our bodies, we decrease in collagen production as we age, which is why supplementation is so important. It is a tasteless powder that can be easily added to coffee or smoothies with many benefits.
